Summary

The Equihash algorithm is based on a Birthday problem generalization that finds hash values colliding. Alex Biryukov and Dmitry Khovratovich proposed Equihash as part of the CryptoLUX research group at the University of Luxembourg. It was introduced at the 2016 San Diego Network and Distributed Symposium on System Security. For reasons such as security, privacy, and ASIC miner resistance, notable blockchain-based projects like ZCash and Aion have integrated Equihash.
